Our Artist-in-Residence program welcomes artists and writers working in a variety of mediums and genres to live and work in the historic center of Padula, immersing themselves in our way of life here and becoming part of the fabric of the community for the duration of their stay. There are no required activities for participants. We trust that residents will use their time in the way that best fuels their creative practice, whether that be to reflect and dream, work and produce, or experiment and play.
Residency periods last for three weeks (18 days), with the possibility for an artist to combine two or more sessions in order to have a longer stay stay of up to 3 months. Cost per resident is about €875 per session (see more details under FEES AND FUNDING below).
We offer each artist a private room and a luminous private studio space at Casa Padula, one of Padula's oldest and most stately residences. Studios range from 16 to 20 sq. meters (175 to 215 sq. ft.). Residents also have use of the large kitchen, the sunroom, il salotto verde (the green salon), library room and the extensive gardens at Casa Padula. We currently host between 3 and 5 artists at a time. We can also accommodate artist couples/pairs who wish to share living and/or working spaces.
Residents are invited to be our guests at a group dinner every Friday. All other meals are the resident's responsibility. The common kitchen will be supplied with staple items where you can for prepare meals at home. For other options, Padula has several small cafes (for a coffee and cornetto) and three restaurants within easy walking distance.

Exploring Padula
Besides spending time in your studio or the gardens of Casa Padula (which are home to the ruins of the Padula castle dating back to the 13th century) , or wandering the maze of streets in the historic center around the house, you may also want to explore a little farther and wider:
- The Certosa di San Lorenzo is a 25-minute downhill walk from Casa Padula and is the largest monastery in Southern Italy as well as one of the most interesting in Europe for its architectural magnificence and abundance of artistic treasures. https://www.beniculturali.it/luogo/certosa-di-san-lorenzo
- The Archeological Museum of the Lucania is housed inside the Certosa di San Lorenzo and has a wonderful collection of artifacts from local excavations.
- The ruins of the ancient roman city of Cosilinum is a 4-hour round trip hike from Casa Padula on an unpaved country road through the woods. The trail leads on to the San Sepulcro church which offers breathtaking views over the valley.
http://www.novacivitas.info/parco-archeologico-di-cosilinum.html - The Eremo di San Michele can be added to the above hike or done separately and is a cave with a long history of religious use, from pre-Christianity onwards. The frescos on the walls date from the 1600s. https://www.sanmicheleallegrottelle.it/
- And any number of walks/hikes in the countryside and mountains around town: Casacata di Frud, Monte Romito, the paleo-christian baptism pool at San Giovanni in Fonte, the monastery of Saint Francis, the valley of the mills.... let us know how much (or little) of an adventure you'd like to go on and we can give you more information.
We are pleased to share that the 2023 Season of our Artist Residency Program has been made possible in large part thanks to a generous sponsorship by Savannah College of Art and Design.
